21-day Silk Road China Buddha Caves Tour

Day By Day

Day 1 Arrive in Datong
Entry from Beijing for Shanghai. After you arrival in Datong your tour guide will meet you and escort you to your hotel for rest.

Day 2 Datong/Zhengzhou
Meals: B, L
Sites visited: Yungang Grottoes, Huanyan Temple

The Yungang Grottoes is listed a UNESCO World Heritage Site with the description "masterpiece of early Chinese Buddhist cave art... and...represent the successful fusion of Buddhist religious symbolic art from south and central Asia with Chinese cultural traditions, starting in the 5th century CE under Imperial auspices."

After sightseeing in Datong, and then take a overnight train to Zhengzhou.

Day 3 Zhengzhou
Meals: D
Sites visited: Henan Museum

Arrive in Zhengzhou in the afternoon, meet your tour guide and transfer to visit the Henan Museum. After dinner and back your hotel for rest. Stay at Zhengzhou.

Day 4 Zhengzhou/Luoyang

Sites visited: Shaolin Temple, Chinese Kung Fu Show

After breakfast, you will take 2 hours's morning drive. The Shaolin Temple is perhaps the most famous Buddhist Temple on earth. It was included on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2010. The temple is home to the famous Shaolin fighting monks. The temple complex is filled with natural beauty and many ancient relics. Visitors can stroll through the temple complex and watch Shaolin Kung Fu being practiced and taught. 

Go ahead Luoyang for night stay.

Day 5 Luoyang/Zhengzhou/Tianshui

Sites visited: Longmen Grottoes, White Horse Temple

After breakfast,  drive from Luoyang and pay a morning visit to Longmen Grottoes. And then go to see White Horse Temple. After sightseeing,  you will be drive over 2 hours from Luoyang to Zhengzhou station.  There you will take an overnight train to Tianshui.

Day 6 Tianshui/Lanzhou

Site Visited: Maijishan Grottoes

Arrive in Tianshui in the early morning, tour guide will pick up you at the train station to have breakfast, then visit the Maijishan Grottoes, transfer to Lanzhou in the evening. Stay at Lanzhou

Day 7 Lanzhou
Meals: B, L, D
Sites visited: Bingling Temple Grottoes, Gansu Museum

Arrive in Lanzhou in the morning. After breakfast, local tour guide and driver will pick up you and drive to Liujiaxia Dam on the Yellow River tributary where you will board a small boat for a stunning river trip through dramatic scenery to the Bingling Temple Grottoes where niches and statues are cut deep into high cliffs. Then back to Lanzhou to visit Gansu Provincial Museum and later check in your hotel. Stay in Lanzhou

Day 8 Lanzhou/Xiahe
Meals: B, L, D
Sites visited: Sangke Grasslands

Start a 3-4 hours' morning driver to Xiahe. Often referred to as 'Little Tibet', Xiahe is famous for the Labrang Lamasery, one of the six leading Buddhist lamaseries in China. The lamasery houses thousands of cultural relics including 60,000 volumes of Tibetan scriptures which have been well preserved. There will also be an opportunity to meet the semi-nomadic herdsmen of the surrounding grasslands. Stay in Xiahe.

Day 9 Xiahe/Lanzhou/Jiayuguan

Sites visited: Labuleng Lamasery, Tangka Painting

Today you will visit the Labuleng Lamasery and see local Lamas working on the Tangka Paiting in the Lamasery. After noon you will be driven back to Lanzhou and board your overnight train to Jiayuguan.

Day 10 Jiayuguan

Sites visited: Great Wall Museum, Underground Gallery and Jiayu Fort

Arrive in Jiayuguan in the early morning transfer to have breakfast. You will have a full day to visit the Jiayuguan Pass, the Great Wall on the Cliff, Weijin Tomb, Great Walls Museum. The Jiayuguan Pass: This Ming Dynasty fort guards the strategic Jiayuguan pass, at the western end of the Great Wall – this was the last section built by the Ming Dynasty. It was built in 1372, and subsequently enlarged and strengthened, and was known as 'the strongest pass under heaven'.

The Great Wall on the Cliff: This is a nearby section of the Great wall which was built on the cliff, and includes sections at a 45 degrees angle, making it seem as if the wall is hanging from a cliff.

Weijin Tomb: About 15 kilometers northeast of Jiayuguan, there are over 1,400 tombs which were built during the Wei and Jin dynasties (between the 3rd and 5th century). They feature brick wall paintings showing various social activities of the times. Then take a overnight train to Dunhuang.

Day 11 Jiayuguan/Dunhuang

Sites visited: Mingsha Dunes, Crescent Moon Lake, Shazhou Night Market.

After arrival in Liuyuan Station, you will rive to Dunhuang after breakfast and have a full day to visit the Echoing-Sand Mountain, the Crescent Lake, Shazhou Night Market. Night stay in Dunghuang.

Day 12 Dunhuang/Turpan
Meals: B, L, D
Sites visited: Mogao Grottoes, Yulin Caves

After breakfast and have a full day to visit Mogao Grottoes, Yulin Caves.  In the evening take a overnight train to Turpan. 

Day 13 Turpan
Meals: B, L, D
Sites visited: Gaochang Ruins, Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves
Arrive Turpan in the early morning than transfer to have breakfast. Stay at Turpan

Day 14 Turpan/Kuqa  
Meals: B, L, D
Sites visited: Jiaohe Ruins, District Museum, Emin Minarete
In the evening take a overnight train to Kuqa.

Day 15 Kuqa
Meals: D
Sites visited: Kuqa grand mosque then explore the city by your own
Arrive Kuqa in the afternoon, than transfer to have breakfast. Stay at Kuqa

Day 16 Kuqa/kashgar  
Meals: B, L, D
Sites visited: Kizil Thousand-Buddha Caves
in the evening take a overnight train to Kashgar

Day 17 Kashgar
Meals: L, D
Sites visited: Id Kah Mosque, Apak Hoja Tomb, old city
Arrive Kashgar in the morning than transfer to have lunch.  Stay at Kashgar

Day 18 Kashgar
Meals: B, L, D
Sites visited: Bulunkou lake, Karakul Lake, Muztagh Ata
Stay at Kashgar

Day 19 Kashgar/Urumqi
Meals: B, L
Sites visited: Sunday Bazaar
Afternoon you will be driven to the airport take your flight from Kashgar to Urumqi.

Day 21 Urumqi /Departure

After you have breakfast in your hotel your tour guide will meet you and then escort you to the airport for your flight home.

Transportation & Private Transfers:

Transportation cost covers all the domestic airfare of economy class with airport tax, train tickets between the cities as the itinerary specified.

Transfer between airports, railway station, hotels and scenic spots for sightseeing around the cities that are specified by the itinerary with private air conditioned vehicle with driver and English-speaking guide. Separate arrivals and departures will incur extra charges.

Entrance Fees:

All entrance fees to the scenic spots listed in the itinerary. The final arrangement will be determined by private tour guides depends on the real-time local circumstances wheather are beyond the control of Access China Travel. We will adhere to the original itinerary as accurately as possible.

Normal Meals:

All normal meals as the itinerary specified: B = breakfast, L = Lunch, D = dinner in local restaurant. Breakfasts are served in hotel, breakfasts have Chinese or Western style for your option; Lunches are served in carefully selected quality local Chinese restaurants with best service, your lunches will be ordered by your guide catering to your preferences within normal standard. Dinners as the itinerary specified will be also served in local Chinese restaurants. The meal quotation is normalized. If you have any special request about meals, like vegetarian, famous rare dishes, Indian food or more, please inform us in advance. For the unspecified dinners, you will have dinner on your own. Feel free to ask your local guide for suggestions or recommendation.

Private Sightseeing Escort:

Normal sightseeing activities as the itinerary listed will be escorted with English-speaking guide. The English-speaking guide and driver in each city are with you throughout the entire itinerary around that city. They do not fly with you from one city to another.

Hotel Accommodation:

Hotel service criterion: two adults share on one standard twin/double-bed room; solo traveler who want to occupy one twin/double-bed room assigned is required for extra single supplement rate. A single room is available on prior request at an additional cost; if a recommended hotel unavailable, it will be replaced by one of the same class. All hotels as the itinerary listed serve daily western or Chinese breakfast. All rooms are air-conditioned with private facilities unless specified.

The tour cost includes the planning, handling, booking, operation and communication charges.
