14-day Silk Road China Tour Xi'an to Gansu Xinjiang Ningxia

Day By Day

Day 1 Arrival in Xi'an
Sites Visited: Drum & Bell Tower, Muslim Quarter, Ancient City Wall

Pick up at the airport and transfer to your hotel. After short rest, you will visit the Drum & Bell Tower, Muslim Quarter and Ancient City wall. Check in your hotel.


Day 2 Xian
Meals: B
Sites Visited: Terracotta Warriors and Horses, Yangling Emperor Mausoleum

After hotel breakfast, the guide will meet to and transfer to visit the amazing Terracotta Warriors and Horses Museum, which boasts the title of the World's Eighth Great Wonder. Here, you may see the clay soldiers and horses of distinct facial expressions and positions orderly arranged in battle formations and the famous Bronze Chariots and Horses, as well as many delicate bronze weapons, presenting a real scene of war in ancient China. After lunch, proceed to visit Yangling Emperor Mausoleum of the Han Dynasty. (Tang Tomb and Qing Tomb are maintaining for visiting).


Day 3 Xian/Tianshui by Train

Sites Visited: Maiji Shan Scenic Area and Grotto

After breakfast, you will take the morning train to Tianshui city to visit the Maiji Shan Scenic Area and Grotto. Overnight in Tianshui city.


Day 4 Tianshui/Xiahe
Meals: B
Sites Visited: Labrang Monastery

After hotel breakfast, transfer to Xiahe with 7hrs driving. On arrival in the afternoon, you will visit Labrang Monastery: One of the major monasteries of the Gelugpa (Yellow Hat) sect. The architectural layout follows the Tibetan style, while the construction patterns are mostly Tibetan, Han, or a mixture of the two. The White Towers (in the northeast and in the northwest) are very typical. After that, check in your hotel.


Day 5 Xiahe/Lanzhou

Sites Visited: Sangke Grassland

After hotel breakfast, you will visit the Sangke Grassland; Lying at an average altitude of over 3,000m above sea level, Sangke Grassland is situated a short 14km from Xiahe.

This vast expanse of grassy plains, covering an area of around 70 square kilometers, is a lonely, beautiful place that is a nice change for those from bustling Chengdu or Lanzhou. There are only 4,000 Tibetan nomads on the grasslands, all wrapped up in their many, dirty layers, who graze yak herds and offer tourists the chance of a ride upon their horses.


Day 6 Lanzhou/Jiayuguan by train

Sites Visited: Binglingsi Thousand Buddha Caves

In the morning, you will have cruise from Liujiaxia Gorge to Binglingsi( fast boat), and Binglingsi Thousand Buddha Caves: These caves, which stretch for 200 meters, were built during the Western Qin, North Wei, Sui, Tang, and Song, Yuan, Ming, Qing dynasties (between the 3rd and 18th centuries). They are highly valued for their contribution to research into the history of Chinese painting, and the spread of Buddhism during that time. In the afternoon, take the train to Jiayuguan with 5hrs. On arrival, guide will pick up and escort you to the hotel.


Day 7 Jiayuguan

Sites Visited: Jiayuguan Great Wall, Weijin Tomb  

You will have a full day to visit the Jiayuguan Pass, the Great Wall on the Cliff, Weijin Tomb, Great Walls Museum. The Jiayuguan Pass: This Ming Dynasty fort guards the strategic Jiayuguan pass, at the western end of the Great Wall – this was the last section built by the Ming Dynasty. It was built in 1372, and subsequently enlarged and strengthened, and was known as 'the strongest pass under heaven'.

The Great Wall on the Cliff: This is a nearby section of the Great wall which was built on the cliff, and includes sections at a 45 degrees angle, making it seem as if the wall is hanging from a cliff.

Weijin Tomb: About 15 kilometers northeast of Jiayuguan, there are over 1,400 tombs which were built during the Wei and Jin dynasties (between the 3rd and 5th century). They feature brick wall paintings showing various social activities of the times.


Day 8 Jiayuguan/Dunhuang

Sites Visited: Yulin Grottoes

After breakfast, you will visit the Yulin Grottoes : These caves, with their murals and sculptures, are in a valley among Qilian Mountain, about 180kms from the Mogao Caves. The name is derived from the elms in the valley, and as you travel along the valley road you can easily imagine how it must have been to be a poet or brave solder in the distant past. In the afternoon, transfer to Dunhuang by vehicle. On arrival, check in your hotel.


Day 9 Dunhuang
Meals: B
Sites Visited: Mogao Grottoes, Echoing-Sand Mountain, the Crescent Lake

You will have a full day to visit the Mogao Grottoes, Echoing-Sand Mountain, the Crescent Lake
After dinner, transfer to the railway station to catch the night train with the soft sleeper to Turpan.Overnight on the train.

Mogao Grottoes : Constructed over a millennium, from the 4th to the 14th centuries, the caves hold the world's richest treasure house of Buddhist sutras, murals and sculptures. Cameras are not permitted.

Echoing-Sand Mountain and Crescent Moon Spring :  The spring's name derives from the crescent moon shape taken by the small pool of spring water between two large sand dunes. Although the area is very dry, the pool doesn't dry up as one might expect.

 
Day 10 Dunhuang/Turpan by Train

Sites Visited: Jiaohe Ancient City, Astana Tombs   
 
Today, the guide will meet you at the railway station. Then you will visit Jiaohe Ancient City, The Flaming Mountain, Astana Tomb and Gaochang city

Jiaohe Ancient City: The city's name means 'the River City'. It was founded during the first century B.C. and abandoned during the 15th century.
Astana Tombs: where the ancient people are buried. It is famous for its terracotta figurines and tomb paintings.

The Flaming Mountain: The Flaming Mountain: Many years of volcanic activity have formed the unique crisscrossing gullies and ravines. During mid-afternoon the heat becomes

intense as the sun's rays are reflected off the red rocks, as though the hillsides areengulfed by tongues of fire, hence the name.

Gaochang City: The Ancient City of Gaochang along with the ancient city of Jiaohe is the best-preserved ruins of the ancient cities in China. Situated at the foot of the Flaming Mountain, it is about about 47 kilometers (29 miles) southeast of Turpan. The ruins site covers an irregular square, occupying an area of about 220 hectares (2,631,178 square yards). Its layout resembles that of the Chang'an during the Tang Dynasty.


Day 11 Turpan/Urumqi

Sites Visited: Tuyoq Valley, Bezklik Grottoes, Local Uyger family

After breakfast visit Tuyoq Valley, Bezklik Grottoes and Local Uyger family in the Vineyard and in the afternoon drive to Urumqi. Tuyoq Valley The caves lies 65 kilometers to the east of the city of Turfan and are constructed or dug in eastern and western cliffs in Tuyoq valley.

Bezklik Grottoes It is located 50 kilometers to the east of Turfan City . “Bezeklik”means “a place with beautiful decoration”. There are 83 numbered caves; among them 40 preserved murals totaling 1200 square meters. These caves are first excavated in Qu`s Gaochang period. The exising caves were reconstructed or newly extended by Uighurian people. In some caves one can find that Buddhish murals are painted on Manichean murals. Themes of the murals are mainly the stories about causes.

Local Uyger Family with Vineyard: Turpan is a kingdom of Grapes, all the local uyger families plant the grapes at the back of their house. Local Uyger family visiting is a special experience for you to know their lifestyle in the fireland.


Day 12 Urumqi/Yinchuan by Air

Sites Visited: Helanshan Mural, the Xi Xia Wang Ling Tombs

After hotel breakfast, take the morning flight to Yinchuan. Then you will proceed to visit the Helanshan Mural and the Xi Xia Wang Ling tombs. In the afternoon, transfer back Yinchuan in the afternoon.


Day 13 Yinchuan/Zhongwei/Yinchuan

Sites Visited:  Qingtongxia 108 Pagodas
 
After breakfast, transfer to Zhongwei city, on the way visit Qingtongxia 108 Pagodas. Arrive Zhongwei transfer to visit the Shapotou Scenic Area .In the afternoon, transfer back Yinchuang.


Day 14 Yinchuan Departure
Meals: B
After breakfast, take the flight for your next destination.

End of service.

Transportation cost covers all the domestic airfare of economy class with airport tax, train tickets between the cities as the itinerary specified.


Transfer between airports, railway station, hotels and scenic spots for sightseeing around the cities that are specified by the itinerary with private air conditioned vehicle with driver and English-speaking guide. Separate arrivals and departures will incur extra charges.


Entrance Fees:

All entrance fees to the scenic spots listed in the itinerary. The final arrangement will be determined by private tour guides depends on the real-time local circumstances wheather are beyond the control of Access China Travel. We will adhere to the original itinerary as accurately as possible.


Normal Meals:

All normal meals as the itinerary specified: B = breakfast, L = Lunch, D = dinner in local restaurant. Breakfasts are served in hotel, breakfasts have Chinese or Western style for your option; Lunches are served in carefully selected quality local Chinese restaurants with best service, your lunches will be ordered by your guide catering to your preferences within normal standard. Dinners as the itinerary specified will be also served in local Chinese restaurants. The meal quotation is normalized. If you have any special request about meals, like vegetarian, famous rare dishes, Indian food or more, please inform us in advance. For the unspecified dinners, you will have dinner on your own. Feel free to ask your local guide for suggestions or recommendation.


Private Sightseeing Escort:

Normal sightseeing activities as the itinerary listed will be escorted with English-speaking guide. The English-speaking guide and driver in each city are with you throughout the entire itinerary around that city. They do not fly with you from one city to another.


Hotel Accommodation:

Hotel service criterion: two adults share on one standard twin/double-bed room; solo traveler who want to occupy one twin/double-bed room assigned is required for extra single supplement rate. A single room is available on prior request at an additional cost; if a recommended hotel unavailable, it will be replaced by one of the same class. All hotels as the itinerary listed serve daily western or Chinese breakfast. All rooms are air-conditioned with private facilities unless specified.
