Mongolian "Nadam Fair" Celebrated in Lanzhou Gansu

Lanzhou city celebrated the "Nadam Fair", a traditional Mongolian festival on May 30 for the people of Mongolian ethnic group living away from home.

Nearly 300 Mongolian people living in Gansu, Qinghai, Yunnan, Guizhou and Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region gathered in Lanzhou, capital city of Gansu province to take part in the celebratory event.

Participants competed in traditional Mongolian wrestling and archery sports. The winners were shown much courtesy and regarded as the most masculine young men in their ethnic group, according to Mongolian traditions.

The event also featured art shows demonstrating Mongolian culture, including folk dancing, chorus of folk songs, and horsehead fiddle solo – a traditional Mongolian bowed string instrument.

The word "Nadam" in the Mongolian language means recreation, entertainment and games. The unique annual recreation event of the Mongolian ethnic group was inscribed on the representative list of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity of UNESCO in 2010.
