Xinjiang Marks China's National Day for Helping the Disabled

The Urumqi Economic and Technological Development Zone (UETD) in Toutunhe district, Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, held various activities on May 14 to mark the National Day for Helping the Disabled.

More than 1,000 people in the district with disabilities received free wheelchairs, hearing aids and an allowance from the local Disabled People's Federation on May 14. The giveaways and allowances were worth a total of 150,000 yuan ($ 24,180).

A number of artistic performances were staged at the district, such as a community's art club. Some officers and soldiers performed danced for the attendees.

According to the Disabled People's Federation, nearly 400 people with disabilities have received free vision rehabilitation surgery and auxiliary equipment this year, and have undergone rehabilitation training.

A rehabilitation center will be built in Toutunhe district's Central Hospital to provide medical rehabilitation and health care for those with disabilities. The center is expected to help 3,500 people annually.

"Improving education for disabled children will be our next task," said Wang Xinhong, chairman of the district’s Disabled People's Federation. "We will formulate the regulations to help disabled children go to the colleges and have access to higher education," added Wang.
